# Chat

> Ask June in the composer, attach files, watch its steps, and stop or steer a reply while it runs.

Use a chat to work through one task with June: ask, review the result, and refine it in the same thread. For a guided example, start with [Your first chat](/docs/getting-started/first-chat).

## Choose what June should work with

- **Your message alone:** paste the facts and describe the result. A connected tool is not needed for a draft or a question about text you provide.
- **A file:** attach it and name what you want June to find, compare, or make.
- **A connected service:** name the account and the material June should use. Connect it on the **Integrations** page first.

Keep unrelated work in separate chats. Use a [project](/docs/projects) when several chats need the same files and instructions.

## Write a message

1. Type in the composer. **Enter** sends; **Shift + Enter** starts a new line. On a phone's on-screen keyboard in the browser, **Enter** starts a new line and the send button sends.
2. Pick the model and its reasoning effort below the text if you want something other than the default. Higher effort is slower and suits harder questions.
3. Send. June's reply streams into the thread; its steps fold into the reply as it works.

Press **↑** in an empty composer to bring back a message you sent, edit it and send it again. Only your own messages come back, not the brief June writes when it starts a new thread for you.

### Format as you type

The web composer can show Markdown as you type. Your text and finished uploads are saved as a draft, so you can leave and come back on the web or in the app. [Writing messages](/docs/chat/writing-messages) covers formatting, draft behavior, and code blocks.

## Quote part of a reply

Select text in a finished reply and choose **Quote** to ask about those exact words. Add a comment and send. On mobile, long-press the reply to start. [Writing messages](/docs/chat/writing-messages#quote-part-of-a-reply) shows the full flow.

_Demo: Keep the words you are discussing beside your comment._

## Watch June work

A reply that needs more than an answer shows its steps: a web search, a file it read, code it ran in [June's sandbox](/docs/how-june-works/sandbox). Open a step to see what went in and what came back. [What June can do in a reply](/docs/how-june-works/tools) lists every tool behind a step.

_Demo: A step June ran while drafting. A failed step shows its error so you can see what did not complete._

## Attach files

Choose **Attach files or photos** in the composer, drop files anywhere on the page, or paste them. A message takes up to 5 files of up to 20 MB each.

_Demo: A file in the thread: preview it beside the conversation, or download it._

- **PDFs** open in a viewer beside the thread.
- **Text, Markdown, CSV and code** open in a text viewer.
- **Images** open full size, with the message's other images a click away.
- Every other file type is attached and can be downloaded, without a preview.

### Edit a picture or PDF before you send it

Open an attached picture or PDF in the composer to mark it up before sending. [Files](/docs/chat/files#edit-a-picture-or-pdf-before-you-send-it) covers drawing, hiding parts of a picture, cropping, and keeping the original.

## Stop and steer a reply

While June replies, the send button becomes **Stop reply**. Press it, or **⌘.** (**Ctrl+.**), and June stops where it is.

Start typing while it replies and the button becomes **Steer**. Send, and June reads your message at its next step and adjusts, without starting over. The message is marked **Steer**, with a dashed outline until June picks it up. **⌘.** still stops the reply.

You can start over instead: choose **Stop and send** beside the button. June stops the reply, keeps what it wrote so far, and answers your message as a new one. Until it goes, the message waits above the composer, where **×** removes it.

> Example prompt: Use the numbers from the March sheet instead

## When June needs your approval

A change that needs approval pauses the reply and shows a card with its details: for example, an email to send, an event to create, or a command that writes files. Review the account, recipients, and content before deciding. **Approve** runs it once; **Deny** turns it down, and you can add a reason afterwards. Where offered, **Allow in this chat** and **Always allow** let that kind of change run without asking within that scope. Some actions require approval every time, and organization rules can limit the choices. Several changes asked at once share one card. Once decided, the card folds to one line that says what happened. Reads never ask.

In a shared chat only the person whose account the change would use can decide it; everyone else sees whose turn it is. [Approvals](/docs/settings/approvals) has the whole picture, the chat menu's **Auto-approve changes in this chat**, and the rules in Settings.

## When a reply fails

If the latest reply fails, the thread says why and offers **Try again**, which sends your message once more. When the model fails partway through, the steps June finished and any text it wrote stay in the reply above the error. A step that was still running shows as failed, and a step still waiting on its approval card does not run.

## What June remembers from a chat

June keeps what is worth keeping from your chats as [memories](/docs/memory), and brings back the ones that fit when you ask something later. On the web, a reply that used memories shows a line such as **3 memories in context** above it; open it to see which. When June saves a memory you can see on the **Memory** page, **Memory saved** shows below the latest reply.

## What June does not do

- It does not let you edit a message once it is sent. Press **↑** to bring the message back, change it and send it again.
- It does not regenerate a finished reply. Ask again in your own words, or steer the next one.
