# Files June reads and hands back

> What June reads from a file you attach, how much of it, what happens to files in a long thread, and the files June makes for you.

Work from the material you already have: ask about a document, compare two files, or have June make a file you can use elsewhere.

For your first file task, attach a PDF and ask for one concrete result, such as dates you need to act on. Review the answer against the original before relying on it.

## Attach a file

1. Choose **Attach files or photos** in the composer, drop a file onto the page, or paste it. You can attach up to 5 files of up to 20 MB each.
2. Say what to do with it. Name the question, the relevant pages or sheets, and the format you want back.
3. Send the message. Review the result beside the original: a PDF or text file opens in the preview panel, and an image opens full size.

_Demo: A file stays attached to the message. Open it to preview the original or download it._

On the web, you can paste a copied image or PDF while the chat is open without focusing the message input. If another text field is focused, that field handles the paste.

You can also [share a file into June from your phone](/docs/getting-started/mobile-app#share-into-june-from-other-apps).

> Example prompt: Read the attached lease and list every date I have to act on

> Example prompt: Compare the two price lists I attached and tell me what went up

## Edit a picture or PDF before you send it

Attach one picture or PDF with **Attach files or photos** and it opens in the editor straight away. To edit any other picture or PDF in the composer, select it.

- **Draw** in one of eight colors and three thicknesses.
- **Hide** pixelates the area of a picture you drag over, so nobody can read what was there, June included. A PDF has no Hide, because its text stays in the file under anything drawn over it.
- **Crop** a picture to any shape or to a square, 4:3 or 16:9, and turn it a quarter turn at a time.

Choose **Done** to keep the edit, or close the editor to leave the file as it was. Until you send the message, you can open the file again and keep editing or undo earlier marks. **Revert** clears every mark, crop and turn, and **Done** then sends the file as you attached it. In the iPhone app, **Markup** opens Apple's own tools on the file, with pens, shapes, text and your signature.

A long paste (32 KB or more) becomes a text file attached to the message, so the composer stays readable. To keep it in the message instead, paste with **⌘⌥⇧V** on a Mac or **Ctrl+Shift+V** elsewhere.

## What June reads from each file

- **PDFs and images** go to the model as files.
- **Text, Markdown, CSV, and JSON** are read as text.
- **Excel and PowerPoint** contribute extracted tables or slide text, within a limit. For a whole workbook, ask June to open it in its sandbox and name the sheets or columns to use.
- **Word documents** may not be readable by the model. Export to PDF and attach that instead.

The ability to attach a file does not guarantee that every model can read it. For exact extraction limits, see [File reading and chat history](/docs/how-june-works/files#what-june-reads-from-each-file).

June can also read your own attached PDFs and Office files a few pages at a time: up to 10 pages per read, within the first 300 pages of a file up to 20 MB. This includes Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx and .xls), and PowerPoint (.pptx). Scanned pages without text are reported as such. For a PDF within those limits, June can show the PDF to the current reply’s model; it does not run OCR.

## Files in a long thread

In a long chat, earlier file content may be shortened or fall out of what June sees. Attach the file again if June no longer has the detail you need. For material several chats should share, add it to a [project](/docs/projects#files).

[File reading and chat history](/docs/how-june-works/files#files-in-a-long-thread) explains the exact limits and how June can read the rest in its sandbox.

## Files June hands back

Ask June for a document, a spreadsheet, a chart or a PDF, and it makes the file in its sandbox and attaches it to its reply.

> Example prompt: Turn this table into a CSV file I can send to the accountant

- The file shows on June's reply like one you attached: it downloads, an image opens as an image, and a PDF or a text file (Markdown, CSV, code) opens in the preview panel. A text preview stops at 1 MB.
- Only what June attaches shows in the thread. A file it made but did not attach stays in its sandbox; ask June to attach it.
- A file one of your integrations hands back while June works, a zip of transcripts or an export, is attached to its reply the same way, on the web and in the app. More than 50 files from one step arrive as one zip. If any of them, or that zip, is over 20 MB, none are attached and June says so.
- When June gives you a link to a file, it opens this chat at that file: a PDF in the preview panel, anything else as a download. Only people in the chat can open it.

## Where files live

- **Attached files**, yours and June's, stay on the thread.
- **Files June makes** stay in [its sandbox](/docs/how-june-works/sandbox#which-chats-share-a-sandbox) until nobody has used it for 30 days. A schedule with a sandbox of its own keeps it 7 days after its last run. In Slack, June has no sandbox.

## Save to Google Drive

With Google Drive connected, ask June to save what it made to your Drive ([Google Drive](/docs/integrations/google-drive)).

> Example prompt: Save the brief you just wrote to my Drive, in the Clients folder

## If a file does not work

- **A file was not added:** check the composer before sending. Remove an attachment if you already have five, or use a smaller file if it exceeds 20 MB, then attach it again.
- **A photo is HEIC:** the app normally converts it to JPEG. If it still cannot be sent, attach a screenshot instead. On the web, HEIC has no preview.
- **The answer misses later rows or pages:** ask June to open the original in its sandbox and read the part you need. See [the reading limits](/docs/how-june-works/files).
- **June made a file but you cannot see it:** ask it to attach the file to its reply. Only attached files appear in the thread.

## What June does not do

- It does not summarize the part of a long thread it no longer reads back: those messages drop out.
- It does not attach a file over 20 MB to a reply: it says so instead. In Slack it makes and attaches no files, and a file an integration hands back there is not attached.
